Got a new neighbor, came over asked construction questions, it was a very hot day so got some beer and snacks for him, helped him out and even hooked him up with several construction guys who are solid for a project.

They knew ME so they gave HIM a very good price DOING ME THE FAVOR.

Then I hooked him up with a material place and between both saved him about $2000.

Next day he brought his wife while waiting for the topographer, asked to sit in my porch, so made them fancy coffees and served them pasteries while they waited...Sent my guys to estimate and measure to figure out amount of cinder blocks and materials he would need.

Those are guys on my payroll not working for an hour each helping him.

They also drove 2 towns over to go get a guy to give this guy estimates on another job.

Today he came to ask me a favor for when his materials arrive which I agreed to, then kinda looked like he expected me to offer him beers and snacks again.

Now this guy is a trucker, drives a brand new rig probably worth $250K+, he mentioned he had other homes and properties up north.

So I pretended to start cleaning my garden, till he left.

If you're going to ask a SHITLOAD of favors from a stranger, it be nice if you brought me a 6 pack to share or sodas for my guys or offer to pay for their gas.

You don't keep showing up empty handed asking for favors...It's the principle of the thing.

I am not related, he's not paying me and I don't owe him anything.

It's not about a 6 pack or sweetbread or some tacos etc.

Then it hit me...He's a leech who doesn't know he's a leech.

I mean I was planning his building material plans for him being neighborly, but I sensed no real appreciation.

If you give favors for free, people don't value them...They assume somehow they deserve them.

The man isn't rude or bad...Just some people think OTHER people have to help them and there is no give and take.

Doesn't even enter their mind.

So now I'm not helping him again.

I so wish I had know this lesson decades ago...Think of all the douchebags you've helped who never even said a proper thank you or bought you lunch when you helped them move or fixed their car etc etc etc.

Ever have a friend borrow your car and not even refill the gas they used?  

Shit like that.
