Dental Tips for People with Dementia: A Guide for Families

With a loved one who is suffering from dementia, life will change a lot for both of you. Some things that were once done automatically, such as dressing up, preparing a cup of tea, or brushing their teeth, become harder to do, sometimes even causing frustration. Oral hygiene care becomes neglected gradually just because of how much other stuff is going on. We, as a dentist in Greenvale, regularly talk to people who are trying their best to cope but still don't have an idea how to tackle this particular problem. If you're in the same place at the moment, please remember, you're not to blame. Here are some tips for you.

Why Mouth Care Matters So Much

It is difficult to discuss teeth while having issues with medications, appointments, and safety of the patient. Nevertheless, there is some value in the oral cavity concerning quality of life that is often overlooked.

Pain in the teeth or gums leads to an inability to eat properly and causes malnutrition or even weight loss. Poorly installed dentures are a difficulty while eating. Dementia patients are not able to express their feelings, which makes it possible for them not to notice their mouth pain for a very long time. Mouth hygiene is important for eating, speaking, sleeping, and the general condition of the patient.

Early Visit to the Dentist

If your relative was diagnosed with a condition recently, try to organize a visit to the dentist. This period is often the most suitable to communicate and make certain decisions concerning the treatment. This will be the right time to solve all possible problems and set up an easy treatment plan for the future. Make sure to inform the dental office about the diagnosis at the appointment. The majority of dental practices will be happy to give you additional time, schedule a quiet time of the day, or create a comfortable environment.

How to Simplify Brushing

Unfortunately, there isn't one best way of doing something. Being patient and flexible will be your key tools.

Establishing the routine can help your loved one get used to the procedure. Doing the same thing at the same time in the same place is essential. Sometimes sitting instead of standing at the basin makes brushing much easier.

Lead by example. You can demonstrate brushing your own teeth as a subtle reminder. Sometimes they only need some encouragement to start the process. Another useful technique is holding your loved one's hand to guide the toothbrush.

Keep instructions simple. Short, calm steps like "Here's your toothbrush" and "Let's brush the top teeth" are often easier to follow than long explanations.

Try different tools. An electric toothbrush, a brush with a chunkier handle, or a special three-sided brush can make cleaning easier for both of you. A small smear of fluoride toothpaste is usually enough, and a low-foaming toothpaste may help if rinsing and spitting have become difficult.

Know when to pause. If they become distressed or resistant, it's okay to stop and try again a little later. Forcing it rarely helps, and a calm moment can make all the difference.

Looking After Dentures

In case your loved one wears dentures, they will also require regular care. You should remove them every day and brush them carefully using a soft brush. You should usually consider removing the dentures at night, unless there is an instruction from the dentist to the contrary.

It is common for dentures to get lost unexpectedly; this is particularly the case where they are used in respite care or aged care institutions. You should consult your dentist on how to ensure that they are labeled with your loved one's name.

As time passes, the gums can be affected by changes in shape, making the dentures ill-fitting.

Watching for Hidden Pain

Because dementia can affect communication, pain doesn't always show up in words. Instead, you might notice changes in behaviour.

They might pull at their face or mouth, refuse food they normally enjoy, or chew on just one side. They might seem more agitated or restless than usual, or have trouble sleeping. Some people stop wanting to wear their dentures, or resist having their mouth touched at all.

Any of these could have many causes, but dental pain is worth considering. If you notice changes like these, booking a dental check can help rule it out or catch a problem early.

Diet and Dry Mouth

Many drugs cause a dry mouth condition, which increases decay risk and makes wearing dentures uncomfortable. Sipping water during the day is an effective recommendation.

Sweets and sugary beverages might become a comfort factor, but this fact cannot be neglected. It is better, whenever possible, to limit their consumption to meal times only. A rinse or glass of water after consuming sweets is a good practice.

Look After Yourself as Well

It takes a lot of effort to look after someone who suffers from dementia. It does not have to be perfect, and it does not have to be done by yourself. Your dentist, GP, carers, and even organizations such as Dementia Australia can contribute to your caring routine.

Each attempt to make your loved one comfortable is precious. There will be days when everything goes smoothly, and there will be days when it does not. The most important thing is the care you show.
