Planning international travel as a student can be expensive, especially when you need to carry extra luggage for studying abroad. The Lufthansa Student Discount program offers eligible students access to special student fares, additional baggage benefits on qualifying routes, and more flexible booking conditions on selected flights.
Whether you are travelling for university admission, higher education, an exchange program, or an international internship, understanding these benefits can help you plan your journey more effectively. In this guide, we will explain student fare eligibility, baggage allowances, booking steps, and practical tips for finding suitable flights with Lufthansa.
What Is the Lufthansa Student Discount?
Lufthansa offers special student fares on selected routes operated by Lufthansa Group airlines. These fares are designed for eligible students travelling internationally and may include additional benefits compared with regular fares.
Depending on the route and fare conditions, benefits can include competitive pricing, increased checked baggage allowance, flexible rebooking options, and refund possibilities. However, student fares are not available on every route and may not always be cheaper than the lowest regular fare.
You can explore the available options through the official Lufthansa Student Fares page.
Who Is Eligible for Lufthansa Student Fares?
To access student fares, passengers generally need to meet Lufthansa's eligibility requirements.
Students must be at least 16 years old at the time of verification and currently enrolled in a higher education institution or have proof of acceptance into one. There is no upper age limit specified for this student fare program.
You must also register for a Lufthansa Travel ID and complete student status verification. Depending on the verification process, you may need to provide a student ID, university acceptance letter, or other proof of enrollment.
Student verification is generally valid for one year, after which you may need to verify your status again if you remain eligible. Check the official requirements before booking because eligibility and route conditions may change.
How to Book the Lufthansa Student Discount
Booking a qualifying student fare involves a few simple steps.
Step 1: Create a Travel ID
Visit the Lufthansa website and register for a Travel ID account, or sign in if you already have one.
Step 2: Verify Your Student Status
Open the profile section of your account and complete the student verification process. Provide any documents requested by Lufthansa.
Step 3: Search for Flights
Return to the official student fares page and search for your departure city, destination, and travel dates.
Step 4: Select a Student Fare
Look for the fare marked with the “Student” designation. You must select the eligible student fare to receive its associated benefits.
Step 5: Review Your Booking
Before making payment, check the total fare, baggage allowance, rebooking conditions, and refund rules.
Lufthansa states that student fares are not available for booking through its app, so use the designated student fares page on its website.
Lufthansa Student Baggage Allowance
Baggage is an important consideration for students travelling abroad with clothes, books, and other essentials.
Most qualifying Lufthansa student fares include two checked bags of up to 23 kg each. However, exceptions apply depending on the route. For example, student fares departing from the United States have a different checked baggage allowance, generally one bag of up to 23 kg.
Passengers may also carry one cabin bag weighing up to 8 kg and one small personal item, subject to the applicable conditions.
Always review the baggage allowance shown during flight selection. If you book a regular fare instead of a designated student fare, you generally cannot add the student fare's additional free baggage benefit afterward.
Tips for Finding the Best Student Flight
To get the most value from the Lufthansa Student Discount, keep the following tips in mind:
-
Book early: Compare flights well before your intended departure, particularly during university admission and holiday seasons.
-
Compare total costs: Consider the ticket price, baggage allowance, and flexibility instead of comparing the base fare alone.
-
Check eligible routes: Student fares are available only on selected routes and qualifying Lufthansa Group-operated flights.
-
Review fare conditions: Check cancellation fees, rebooking rules, and possible fare differences before booking.
-
Prepare your documents: Keep your student verification details, passport, visa, and other required travel documents ready.
Student fares are generally offered in Economy Class. Availability and prices can vary according to demand, route, and travel dates.
Conclusion
The Lufthansa Student Discount can be a useful option for eligible students planning international journeys. Special fares, additional checked baggage on many qualifying routes, and flexible booking conditions may help make travel more convenient.
Before booking, verify your student status, search through Lufthansa's official student fares page, and carefully review the benefits associated with your selected ticket. Comparing the complete travel cost and checking the current baggage rules will help you choose the flight that best suits your study plans and budget.
