Selection of a candidate to join the Indian Police is one of the most sought-after careers that offer them a respectable government service position along with security and chances of serving society. Some of the career options available to candidates with Class 10, Class 12, and graduation qualification are Constable, Sub-Inspector (SI), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), and others from police careers.

Those candidates looking forward to joining Sarkari Naukri in 2027 should have knowledge of eligibility criteria, age restrictions, physical standards, selection process, and promotion opportunities, among others. The recruitment process is carried out by different central and state organizations, which include Staff Selection Commission (SSC), state police recruitment board, and State Public Service Commissions (PSCs).

Three Main Entry Routes

1. Constable (State Police): Entry-level, mostly requiring candidates to have passed 12th standard. Each individual state has their own recruitment panel.

2. Sub-Inspector (SI): The most popular among the officer-level entries, which requires a graduate degree. It can be done via state panels as well as SSC CPO for Delhi police and CAPFs.

3. IPS Officer: The best path to become an IPS officer is through the UPSC Civil Services Exam. The eligibility criteria require candidates to have graduated and their general category age limit is 21-32 years with six attempts.

Eligibility Criteria

Qualification: Posts of Constable generally require 12th pass. As in case of UP Police Constable, the qualification requirement is listed as 12th pass (Intermediate). For posts of SI/CAPF Sub-Inspector, bachelor degree from a recognised university is required.

Age limit: It is flexible and depends upon post and state. In case of UP Police, general category male applicants could apply if they fell within the 18-25 years age group while OBC/SC/ST male applicants had to be aged 18-30 years. Remarkably, the age limit in case of UPPRPB was reduced due to demand for relaxation.

For SSC CPO posts, the general age limit is 20-25 years, OBC age limit is up to 28 years and for SC/ST age limit is up to 30 years. Relaxation for ex-Agniveers may also apply. In case of UP Police Constable recruitment, it is an extra 3 years on the upper age limit.

Physical Standards: All recruitments involve physical standard test (height & chest) and physical efficiency test (running, long jump, high jump & so forth). Standards vary according to gender and candidates belonging to hill regions/Scheduled Tribes.

Selection Process

Most of the police recruitment process goes through these steps:

  1. Online application on the official website of the recruiting agency

  2. Written test (Objective type), which includes general knowledge, reasoning, numerical ability and Hindi/Regional language

  3. PST/PET which is qualifying in almost all the states

  4. Document and character verification

  5. Medical test

  6. Final merit list & Training

In case of SSC CPO, there is an additional Paper 2 which tests English and comprehension skills, after Paper 1 and Physical test.

Latest Recruitment

These recent cycles reflect the scale of recruitment for the police force:

  • UP Police Constable: Notification was out on December 31, 2025, with 32,679 vacancies.

  • SSC CPO 2026: Notification has covered 1,871 tentative Sub-Inspector vacancies in Delhi Police, CAPFs and CISF, and the application window is between September 10 and September 30.

For 2027, notifications in most of the states are yet to come. The past cycles reveal that huge recruitment in the states and the annual SSC CPO exams take place every year, and hence the past year cycle should be your guide for preparation.

Salary

The salary structure for SSC CPO Sub-Inspector is Level-6 (7th CPC) and includes Pay Matrix of ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400. The salary of Constables is less than the above structure, but still they are eligible for allowances and benefits.

Career Path and Promotions

A general hierarchy in state police goes something like this:

Constable -> Head Constable -> Assistant Sub-Inspector -> Sub-Inspector -> Inspector -> Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) -> Additional SP -> SP -> other IPS ranks

Entrants who are Direct SI go up the ladder faster than constables. There are many states where there are departmental exams or quotas for getting constables into officer ranks. IPS officers begin as ASP/SP and can eventually become DGP.

CAPF Sub Inspectors (BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB) take the path of Inspector -> Assistant Commandant -> Commandant and have many prospects throughout the country.

Preparation Tips for 2027

Prepare for the right syllabus: Give more importance to reasoning, basic mathematics, current affairs, general science, Indian polity and history, and language paper of your state. Solve previous year’s question papers and give mock tests.
