Umrah Visa for UK Citizens: Requirements, Nusuk & Processing Times
UK citizens can perform Umrah using either the Saudi tourist eVisa, the Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW), or a traditional Umrah visa arranged through a licensed travel agent. Most applications are approved within 24 to 72 hours, but every pilgrim must also register on the Nusuk platform to obtain an Umrah permit — without it, you cannot enter Masjid al-Haram, even with a valid visa in your passport.
This guide explains each visa route, the documents you need, how Nusuk fits into the process, and how long everything realistically takes, so you can plan your pilgrimage with confidence.
Which Visa Do UK Citizens Need for Umrah?
British passport holders have three main routes into Saudi Arabia for Umrah. The right one depends on how you are booking your trip and how much flexibility you want.
1. Saudi Tourist eVisa
The tourist eVisa is the most popular option for UK pilgrims travelling independently. It is valid for one year with multiple entries, allows stays of up to 90 days per visit, and officially permits Umrah outside the Hajj season. You apply online through the official Visit Saudi portal (visa.visitsaudi.com) or the Nusuk app, and approval usually arrives by email within 24 to 72 hours.
2. Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW)
The EVW is a digital travel permit available to British citizens at a lower cost than the tourist eVisa — typically around £45. It is single-entry, valid for 180 days, and can be used for Umrah. Processing is fast, with most approvals issued within 24 hours. For a one-off pilgrimage, this is often the most economical route.
3. Traditional Umrah Visa (Through a Licensed Agent)
The dedicated Umrah visa is issued through travel agents authorised by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Since late 2025, this route requires confirmed hotel and transport bookings verified through the Nusuk platform before the visa can be approved. This makes it best suited to pilgrims booking a complete package, where the agent handles hotels, transfers, and visa paperwork together as one compliant booking.
Which should you choose? If you are booking a package through an ATOL-protected agency, the traditional route is handled for you. If you are arranging everything yourself, the tourist eVisa or EVW gives you more flexibility — but remember that neither books your hotels, transport, or Umrah permit for you.
Umrah Visa Requirements for UK Citizens
Whichever route you take, prepare the following before applying:
- A British passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date in Saudi Arabia — not from the date you apply. This distinction causes avoidable rejections every year.
- A recent passport-style photograph meeting Saudi photo guidelines (plain background, no headwear obscuring the face).
- Confirmed accommodation details. Hotel bookings must be with properties verified on the Nusuk platform, particularly for the traditional visa route.
- Confirmed travel details, including return or onward flights.
- A MenACWY (meningitis) vaccination certificate, administered at least 10 days before arrival. Saudi Arabia requires this for all pilgrims aged one year and older, and the UK Health Security Agency also recommends it due to ongoing MenW risk associated with travel to the Kingdom. Certificates are typically valid for three to five years depending on the vaccine type.
- Travel insurance covering emergency medical treatment in Saudi Arabia. Basic emergency medical cover is included with some visa fees, but comprehensive UK travel insurance is strongly advised.
- Consistent personal details across every document. Even a minor spelling difference between your visa application and passport can cause rejection.
UK residents who hold a non-British passport can usually still apply, but must provide evidence of valid UK residency, and eligibility varies by nationality — check with a licensed agent before booking flights.
What Is Nusuk and Why Is It Mandatory?
Nusuk is the Saudi government's official platform for planning and managing pilgrimage. Since 2025, it has become central to the entire Umrah journey, and there are two things every UK pilgrim must understand:
First, your visa alone does not grant access to the Grand Mosque. You must book an Umrah permit through the Nusuk app after your visa is approved. Entry to Masjid al-Haram for Umrah is managed through these timed permits to control crowding.
Second, Rawdah visits are booked separately. If you wish to pray in Rawdah ul Jannah at Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah, you need a dedicated Nusuk slot. These are released on a rolling basis and are often taken within minutes, so download the app, create your profile with your visa number as soon as your approval arrives, and check daily.
For the traditional agent-issued visa, Nusuk verification now happens before approval: your hotel and transport bookings must come from Nusuk-compliant providers, and applications without verified bookings are rejected automatically. This is the single biggest procedural change of recent years, and it is why booking your visa and ground arrangements through the same licensed agency has become the safest approach.
Umrah Visa Processing Times for UK Applicants
Two timing rules matter more than any others:
Apply at least three weeks before departure. Processing volumes rise sharply ahead of Ramadan and school holidays, and technical delays — an unclear photo, an inconsistent hotel reference — can add days.
Respect the Hajj suspension window. Umrah visa issuance closes several weeks before Hajj each year and reopens after the season ends. In 2026, the final day for Umrah visa issuance was 20 March. If you are planning a spring pilgrimage, confirm the current year's cut-off with your agent before booking flights, as travelling too close to the deadline risks losing your trip entirely.
How Much Does an Visa Umrah Cost from the UK?
Costs vary by route and by how you book. As a general guide, the EVW is the cheapest option at approximately £45, the tourist eVisa typically costs £80–£125 including its associated fees, and agent-arranged Umrah visas vary with the package. Urgent processing services cost more. Treat any price you see online as indicative — fees change, and the final amount depends on exchange rates and service charges at the time of application.
If you book a complete Umrah package with an ATOL-protected agency, the visa is normally included, and the ATOL scheme financially protects your flight-inclusive booking against the company's financial failure.
Common Reasons UK Umrah Visa Applications Are Rejected
- Passport validity calculated from the application date rather than the arrival date
- Name spelling differences between the application and passport
- Hotel bookings that are not Nusuk-verified, or visa and transport booked through different agencies
- Applying inside the pre-Hajj suspension window
- Unclear or non-compliant photographs
- Booking through unlicensed agents — the FCDO warns that Hajj and Umrah fraud persistently targets British Muslims, so always verify that your agent is authorised by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and, for flight-inclusive packages, ATOL-protected
If your application is rejected, do not simply reapply with the same details. Identify the cause first — most rejections trace back to one of the errors above and are fixable on the second attempt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Umrah allowed on a Saudi tourist eVisa for British passport holders?
Yes — outside the Hajj season, the tourist eVisa covers Umrah for British travellers. The visa itself, however, is not enough for mosque entry: an Umrah permit must first be booked through the Nusuk app.
How long does a UK Umrah visa take to process?
Most tourist eVisa and EVW applications are approved within 24 to 72 hours. Agent-arranged Umrah visas take longer, and Ramadan-season applications can stretch to 10–14 working days.
Can a woman from the UK perform Umrah without a Mahram?
Yes. Saudi Arabia no longer requires a Mahram for women applying through the tourist eVisa route, regardless of age. Women travelling on agent-arranged visas can also travel independently, particularly within organised groups.
Do children need their own Umrah visa?
Yes — no traveller is exempt, whatever their age. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or recognised legal guardian travelling with them, as Saudi rules do not allow unaccompanied minors to make the journey.
Is the MenACWY vaccine compulsory for Umrah?
Yes. Saudi Arabia requires the meningococcal ACWY vaccination for all pilgrims aged one year and older, taken at least 10 days before arrival. Carry your certificate when you travel.
Where in the UK can I fly to Jeddah non-stop?
Non-stop Jeddah routes currently operate from three UK airports: London Heathrow, Manchester, and Birmingham. Travelling from elsewhere in the UK? A short connection — often via Heathrow or a Gulf hub — links you to the same routes.
