Is the German Language Related to Latin?
To learn German, it is important to grasp the question words to develop regular conversations. The trio that often baffles newcomers are wo, woher, and wohin. Where do you come from? Where are you going? Like many beginners to the German language, you may be asking yourself is German a Latin language and is German Latin based. As you get to know the words and language structure, knowing the history of the language will give you a small glimpse. As you learn the correct context for these three words, it will be much easier to ask directions, introduce yourself and discuss traveling.
1. Wo means what in German?
German word for "where" is wo, it is used to ask where a person or object is located. It is about a location or position, not about moving towards or away from a location.
Examples include:
-
Wo wohnst du?
-
Where is my cell phone?
-
Were are you working?
-
Wo bist du jetzt? – Where are you now?
In the examples below, the questions refer to an existing location. Wo wohnst du? means “Where do you live?” rather than asking where you are travelling. When learning through German Training in Bangalore, understanding these question words can help you form sentences more naturally. It is easy to remember that wo means “where” in German when asking about a place.
2. What Does Woher Mean in German?
When asking someone the place of his or her birth, or the beginning of something, use Woher, which translates to “where from.” It is used to determine a person's or thing's origin.
Here are some typical examples:
-
Where are you from? – Woher kommst du?
-
Woher ist diese Zug?
-
Woher habt ihr das Buch?
-
Woher ist deine Familie?
Imagine you are introduced to a person. And if you want to know where he or she comes from then you can ask - Woher kommst du? The candidate will answer you with a simple sentence as Ich komme aus Indien ("I come from India"). In your German Classes in Mumbai, practicing such questions and answers will help you self-introduce yourself.
3. In German, Wohin translates to "where".
Wohin is the expression of direction “where to?” and expresses direction to a goal or destination. Useful when talking about travel plans, daily activities or directions.
Consider these examples:
-
Wohin gehst du? (Where are you going?
-
Morgen, wohin fährst du? – Where are you going tomorrow?
-
Wohin fliegt das Flugzeug? To where is the plane flying?
-
Wohin willst du reisen? – Where would you like to go?
If your friend is packing up to move out, you can ask him/her: Wohin gehst du? (Where are you going?); you can find out where he/she goes.
The important thing is that wohin is the to which of a person or thing.
4. A Comparison of Wo, Woher and Wohin.
These are words that are related but not the same and have different functions in sentences.
Wo: Inquiries where someone is now. Answer: Ich bin in der Stadt. – I am in the town.
Woher: Asks about where something came from or where it began. Example: Woher ist du? – Where are you from?
Wohin: Queries about a place. Question: Where are you going? – Answer: Wohin gehst du? – Ich gehe zum Nord- oder Osterpark.
A simple way to remember them would be to associate each word with a simple concept: wo = "where" or "position", woher = "from where" or "from whence", and wohin = "where to" or "where from".
