How to Avoid Crowds at Watkins Glen State Park

Watkins Glen State Park is one of the Finger Lakes’ most popular natural attractions, so sharing its narrow gorge with plenty of other visitors is sometimes unavoidable. However, choosing the right day, arrival time, and hiking route can help you experience its waterfalls at a much calmer pace.

Visit on a Weekday

One of the easiest ways to avoid crowds at Watkins Glen State Park is to visit during the week. Local visitor accounts note that foot traffic tends to move more slowly on weekdays than on busy weekends, making Tuesday through Thursday particularly appealing when your schedule allows.

Weekends naturally attract more day-trippers, especially when the weather is warm. The park is one of the Finger Lakes region’s best-known attractions, with 19 waterfalls packed into its dramatic gorge, so popular summer Saturdays can feel considerably busier.

Avoid major holiday weekends when possible as well. If a weekend is your only option, combine it with an early start rather than arriving around the middle of the day.

Late spring and September weekdays can offer a particularly useful balance. The Gorge Trail is normally open during these periods, but you are outside at least part of the main summer vacation rush.

Get There Early

Watkins Glen State Park is open from dawn to dusk, which gives early risers a major advantage. Arriving close to dawn lets you start exploring before many visitors have reached the park.

This matters on the Gorge Trail because some sections are relatively narrow. Stone staircases, tunnels, bridges, and popular waterfall viewpoints naturally slow people down, especially when several groups stop for photographs at the same place.

An early start also lets you experience the gorge at a more relaxed pace. Rather than trying to squeeze past other visitors, you can pause at features such as Cavern Cascade, Glen Cathedral, and Rainbow Falls and actually take in the surroundings.

If you are driving, early arrival can also simplify parking. The park has multiple entrances, including the Main, South, and Upper entrances, so reviewing the trail map before traveling can help you choose the starting point that best fits your route.

Travel Outside the Peak Summer Period

The Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen State Park opened for the 2026 season on May 9 and typically remains open until around mid-October, depending on weather and trail conditions. That gives you opportunities to visit outside July and August while still experiencing the park’s signature trail.

Late May, June, and September can all work well. You still get access to waterfalls and gorge scenery, but choosing a weekday during these shoulder periods can help reduce the chances of encountering the largest summer crowds.

September is particularly convenient for visitors who care more about hiking than swimming. The park’s 2026 swimming pool season ended September 7, while the Gorge Trail is expected to remain open into October.

Fall foliage can attract its own wave of visitors, however, so do not assume that every October day will feel quiet. Earlier fall weekdays usually make more sense when avoiding crowds matters more than seeing peak leaf color.

Winter is considerably quieter, but there is an important trade-off. The Gorge Trail closes seasonally because of hazards such as falling rock, leaving the North and South Rim trails open but preventing visitors from seeing the waterfalls from the famous gorge route.

Plan Your Route Before You Arrive

Having a route in mind can also reduce unnecessary time in the busiest areas. The Gorge Trail is approximately 1.5 miles, while the North Rim Trail is around 1.1 miles and the South Rim Trail about 1.8 miles.

Instead of retracing every step, consider combining the Gorge Trail with a rim trail. This gives you the classic waterfall experience while also moving into quieter wooded sections above the gorge.

The seasonal shuttle can help with one-way routes. In 2026, it operates between the Main, South, and Upper entrances, running daily through September 7 and on weekends only from September 8 until the Gorge Trail season ends around mid-October. The current fare is $6 per person each way.

Always check trail and shuttle conditions shortly before your trip. Weather and seasonal operations can change, and a little planning prevents you from discovering a closure only after you arrive.

For the quietest experience at Watkins Glen State Park, choose a weekday in late spring or September and arrive as close to dawn as practical. Start with the Gorge Trail before foot traffic builds, then explore a rim trail for a different—and often calmer—perspective.

Check current conditions, wear proper footwear for the stone steps, and leave enough time to enjoy the waterfalls without rushing.
