Rule 1: Thou shalt check voltages!
Busted out this Ethernet cable tester for the first time in a while. Put in a new battery, flip the switch: nothing!
Check battery with the multimeter - 9.4V
Check voltage on the circuit board side: nothing!
Incredibly, the battery snap and leads failed.
Fire up the soldering iron, de-solder the old one, install / solder a new one (had a bunch that I bought years ago at Radio Shack - remember them?).
Lo and behold - it works!
Now to get back to tracing out the cluster of Ethernet cables run to a switch - none are labeled, and they're all black.
