Kitchen Renovation in Dubai: Layout, Materials and the Mistakes Worth Avoiding
The kitchen is the room you notice most when it is wrong. A poorly placed hob, weak extraction or a worktop that stains within a year affects every meal. Because kitchens combine plumbing, electrical load, ventilation and heavy joinery in one small space, they are also where a renovation is easiest to get wrong.
Here is how to approach a kitchen renovation in Dubai so the finished room works as well as it looks.
Plan around how you cook, not how the kitchen looks
Before choosing finishes, answer three questions: who cooks, how often, and what kind of cooking? A household that fries and uses strong spices daily needs a very different extraction and layout than one that mainly reheats and entertains.
Think in zones rather than a single “work triangle”: storage, preparation, cooking, cleaning and serving. A well-zoned kitchen lets two people work at once without colliding, which matters in family homes.
Decide on an open, closed or wet-and-dry layout
Many Dubai villas and larger apartments are designed with a main show kitchen and a separate prep or “wet” kitchen. Keeping a smaller, enclosed space for heavy cooking lets the main kitchen stay clean and open to the living area. If your property does not have one, a well-designed extraction system is the next best option.
Do not underestimate extraction and ventilation
Powerful extraction is one of the least glamorous and most valuable upgrades. Cooking grease and moisture settle on cabinet fronts, walls and lighting. Ducted extraction that vents outside, sized to the hob, protects every other finish you pay for.
Choose materials that suit the climate
• Worktops: compare quartz, natural stone and engineered surfaces for stain, heat and scratch resistance, not just appearance.
• Cabinetry: moisture-resistant carcass boards and quality edge sealing help joinery last in a humid environment.
• Hardware: soft-close hinges and drawer runners are small costs that you use hundreds of times a year.
• Flooring: choose surfaces that handle spills and heavy foot traffic without becoming slippery.
Appliances: confirm specifications before the design is final
Built-in ovens, induction hobs and integrated fridges each have precise cut-out sizes, ventilation gaps and electrical requirements. Premium appliance brands such as Miele are often specified in high-end kitchens, but the same rule applies to any brand: confirm the model and dimensions first, then draw the joinery around it. Doing it the other way round leads to expensive remakes.
Get the services right
Moving the sink or hob means moving plumbing, drainage and electrical connections. Check that the electrical board can handle the load of modern appliances, and plan socket positions for countertop devices before the walls are closed. Good lighting also needs planning early: combine ambient ceiling light, task lighting under wall units and accent lighting for depth.
Five common kitchen renovation mistakes
• Ordering cabinets before the final site measurements are taken.
• Choosing a beautiful worktop without checking how it handles heat and stains.
• Too few sockets, or sockets in places hidden by appliances.
• Ignoring storage for bulky items such as small appliances and cookware.
• Treating the kitchen as a separate project from the rest of the home, so finishes and lighting do not match.
Kitchen on its own, or part of a bigger project?
If the rest of the home is also due for work, bundling the kitchen into a wider scope keeps flooring, lighting and joinery consistent. Mignon handles both single-room projects and whole-home work, so you can start with the kitchen renovation service or look at the full villa renovation approach if you are updating more than one space.
Budgeting without surprises
The biggest drivers of kitchen cost are joinery quality, worktop material, appliances and how much plumbing and electrical work is moved. Ask for an itemised quote so you can see each of those clearly, and use a planning tool like the Mignon cost calculator to test different scopes before you commit.
A great kitchen is rarely the result of one clever idea. It comes from many practical decisions made in the right order.
