Frenkel believed he possessed “psychic-biological” powers strong enough to halt moving vehicles. He claimed to have used his abilities to stop bicycles, cars, and streetcars, and wrote in notes later found by investigators: “First I stopped a bicycle, cars, and a streetcar. Now I’m going to stop a train.” Near the city of Astrakhan, he put this to the test by stepping onto railway tracks in front of a freight train, arms raised and body tensed. The driver applied the emergency brakes, but the train could not stop in time and kil*led him. The incident later became a well-known Darwin Awards case and is often cited as an extreme example of fatal overconfidence in paranormal powers.".
